Open lunch and dinner. One of the best salads I ate in Chile. Good crab stew (chupe de jaiva). Good wine list. Friendly, efficient service. Signs posted inside: "Gracias por no fumar" (Thank you for not smoking). No outdoor seating available. Reasonably priced (as were all restaurants where I ate in Chile).

March 2006:: Uruguay banned smoking in enclosed public spaces, including restaurants, bars, malls, and office buildings. Reviews of venues which actually comply are most welcome.

Report July 2008: The non-smoking ban is taken seriously- fines are high. This has become a non-smokers paradise. It is rare for the ban to be broken. Try the Fun-Fun tango bar on ciudadela, or Cheesecake Records- with current music, live bands and the best cheesecake in Uruguay- also on Ciudadela, almost opposite each other. Ciudadela is off Plaza Independencia, where you can get a filling tasty meal incredibly cheap-40 pesos for a good sized wrap., at Crepes del Sol -- Plaza Independencia 715. The buses are totally smoke free.All the stores. There is little smoking in the streets. The biggest problem is the cold in high ceiling colonial style houses, and use of wood fires for heat. Even the Che Largo Hostel,Independencia Plaza, and Hostel Ciudad Vieja in the Ciudad Vieja Area were totally smoke free when i was there. I am studying Spanish at Academia Uruguay- totally non-smoking, they have free trips after class. The EXCEPTIONS are : Red Hostel, on San Jose, Planet Montevideo Hostel on Canelones, and worse- because i paid and couldn't get my money back after being told i was getting non smoking housing and schooling as i have asthma -- the La Herradura Spanish School on Juan de Salterain ( and Guana). The live in house keeper smokes from 8am when her alarm goes off, with the last cigarette after 10pm at night, and the school is inside the house so students get to share smoke during class too.. I left. This is the place that both the spanishabroad and amerispan dot com web sites send students-- so be warned.

I have also been to Colonia del Sacramento, Punta del Este, Maldonado, Piriapolis, Canelones, and Atlantida. The ban is country wide, and in all these places i had no problems... Of the Montevideans i have talked to, the vast majority say they, and friends and family, don't smoke, and either the ban doesn't affect them, or they are glad of it. I have not seen anyone smoking in any of the stores, malls, cafes, restaurants, internet cafes or museums that i have been in in almost 2 months here. Also there are plenty of security guards, and 'Tourist Police to keep an eye on things. Even at the weekend open air markets there is very little smoking. The few people who do smoke generally step off to the side to smoke. I have enjoyed the crowds and bustle with not a whiff of nicotine in my lungs. It is FANTASTICO.
