Certains des établissements énumérés ci-dessous montrent le label "ICI C'EST 100% SANS TABAC". C'est un projet de la ville de Paris et de l'association des restaurateurs SYNHORCAT:
http://www.paris.fr/fr/solidarites/actualites/label_sans_tabac/default.asp

Some venues below use the label "Here it's 100% smokefree". This is a project of the City of Paris and the restaurateurs' association SYNHORCAT:
http://www.paris.fr/fr/solidarites/actualites/label_sans_tabac/default.asp
Some reviewers feel this label is not serious, as they have found smoke reaching non-smoking areas in restaurants with the label.

The section on chain restaurants from the main France page is repeated here, after the venues below. There is a new section on apartments and other rented lodging, below. November 2003: a new section for venues and entertainment which are different.

L'Artisan de Saveurs
72, rue du Cherche Midi (6th)   (33)1-42-22-46-64
Metro: Sevres-Babylone/Vaneau-St. Placide/Falgiere
This restaurant, which serves lunch, brunch and tea (closed in the evenings) is a God send in Paris. The food is delicious - fish, meat and salad dishes as well as baskets of pastries and an impressive tea list. As of January 2002, they are completely smoke-free, permitting smoking only at two small sidewalk tables.
On the first Thursday of each month between 17h and 18h, they have a "The Poesie" - a Poet's Tea - allowing you to enjoy an author's reading while you sip your Lapsong Oolong.
Restaurant: 12h to 14h30 * Tea Room, until 18h30
Brunch Saturday and Sunday from noon to 15h. * Closed Mondays.

Metro: Rambouteau or Hotel de Ville
Smokefree sections. When I first walked into this restaurant, I did my usual: "I'm terribly sorry, but I am allergic to cigarettes. Is it possible you have a tiny table tucked away somewhere where I might be safe?" The owner took my hands in his, told me never to apologize for an allergy and told me that all the tables (five of them) in the front of the restaurant were non-smoking. Always. And if anyone phones to reserve, he will guarantee there will be no smokers. And true it is. The front of this charming restaurant is smoke-free. However, there is a bar there as well, and from time to time someone will light up. However, if you mention the problem to Thierry, your wonderful host, he will see the offender puts out his smoke. Even if he forgets and is the offender himself!
The food here is worth noting. Hell, it's worth writing home about! I have enjoyed a scrumptions glazed lamb, done to a turn, as well as fabulous chicken and fish. You will not be disappointed. For 2 courses: 22E. For 3 courses 27E. Couldn't be more reasonable for what you get.
They are closed lunchtime on Saturday and Sunday, as well as all day Monday.

Note: there have been conflicting follow-ups. One recent visitor found it a good smokefree experience; another says it has a nonsmoking *room* in the back but lacks ventilation and that much of the smoke from the front of the store ends up there eventually.

Crêperie Bretonne, ayant un réel espace non-fumeur.

August 2005 review: A real treasure in Paris: totally smoke-free, very pleasant, very casual, wonderfully fresh crepes. It is run by a couple (she takes orders and serves, he cooks) who are friendly and quite helpful to non-French speakers. They also take credit cards. Thanks Randy!

Wholesale wine prices, aged wines at great prices, wood-beamed dining room, sophisticated & cozy, 4-course menu. Reserve well in advance. One of two rooms downstairs is (at least sometimes) nonsmoking - but the other is not, and it became a smoky haze after three hours. (April 2001.)

Brasserie Bofinger
5-7 rue de la Bastille Metro (Metro: Bastille ;) )     tel 0033 1 42 72 87 82
Rated "15" in Zagat. Bustle, glamorous, old-style brasserie. Be seated under high stained-glass dome, which is also the NF (non-fumer) section. Platters of oysters, choucroute (Alsatian specials - sauerkraut & sausages, etc.) & grilled meats. House Riesling & good Rhone wines. Black-tied waiters. (See women's restroom.) 180F (includes half bottle of wine), lunch & dinner prix fixe.
thanks JD!

Update: This cautionary tale from another customer is plainly at odds with JD's experience. What can we say? "On May 25, 2003 I went to Bofinger and was pleased as a single diner to be seated almost immediately despite the long line. The pleasure did not last long.
I ordered the fixed price meal and one bite into the terrine I noticed a black hair in the center of the food. I summoned the waiter and after some discussion with the maitre'd who questioned my eyesight they took the terrine back to the kitchen. Ten minutes later the waiter reappeared with another plate. This terrine had two corners sliced off. Apparently it was the same piece doctored up and with the hair removed. Angry, I decided not to say anything else. The main course of steak and mashed potatoes and the dessert of homemade strawberry ice cream were good, but the flavors were tainted by the first course and the appalling behavior of the staff.    Had that been it, I would have probably forgotten the whole incident, but the next morning I was ill and by afternoon I was bedridden and vomiting with the worst food poisoning I have ever had. The fish in the terrine was clearly the culprit. I was extremely ill for 36 hours and did not fully recover until five days later."

We dare question neither reviewer.

Aux Charpentiers
10, rue Mabillon (6th)     tel 01 43 26 30 05
Non-smoking sections. The owners of this small restaurant have a designated smoking section, divided by a wall from the smokers. However, the night we were there it was filled with non-smokers, French and foreign alike, and we had no problem with smoke. It may have been we were lucky, but the staff was very accomodating. Food is excellent French bistro fare.

This very new restaurant has opened this summer and was the first one to ask for the label "100% sans tabac" before its opening. Located close to the Etoile's arch it offers a good French food for a very decent price, especially considering the area. For 25€ you get a menu with starter, main dish and dessert. Giufeli
129 rue du Château (14ème)     01 43 27 32 56
Complêtement non-fumeur.
The chef of this restaurant is a real one who is able to work on a large range of ingredients with fabulous results in a French/Mediterranean style. The restaurant has a modern aspect (some like, some dislike it), a young and dynamic team and would be perfect if it had less customers. In fact the room is too small and it is not only difficult to get a place without reservation but it is also very noisy. I do not like noise but the food here is so delicious I can suffer a little for such a great pleasure. It seems they want to open only for dinner. No dress code. 22€ for a menu including starter, main dish and dessert. Closed in August 2005 (open again after the 22nd of August)
Thanks Garfield!

Grand Corona
3, Place de l'Alma (8th)   (33)+1.47.20.70.27
Smokefree sections. This restaurant has recently changed hands and in the rennovation they have added a terrific non-smoking section, well separated from the smokers. Just across the river from the Eiffel Tower and right off the Seine, it's a popular brassiere-style restaurant. The food is very good and the service pleasant. There is also an aged golden labrador dog who will be pleased to receive a pet on the head. The prices may be slightly overpriced, but in this neighbourhood, they are not unreasonable. Given the quality of the food and the lack of non-smoking alternatives in the area, it's a bargain. They also have a good terrace if you don't mind outdoor smoke proximity.
Thanks to author Lauren B. Davis!

Le Grenier de Notre-Dame
18, rue de la Bucherie (5th: Metro Maubert-Mutualité)

La Grange St Michel
11 r. St Severin (Metro St Michel)
One of the Ye Olde Tourist type restaurants in the winding streets near metro St Michel. Mountain lodge decor. Nonsmoking floor upstairs, which was full when I ate there. Downstairs, tables are neck and neck, so you can't avoid smokers. The food is heavy, "country style" dining - chicken and potatoes and wine. Like a number of the restaurants in that area, has a large non-cuddly stuffed animal in the entrance.

Fondue, in a little corner with dueling fondue restaurants. Entirely nonsmoking. It smelled clean in there. But I wonder. I asked about it, and the waiter said, it's nonsmoking, and then asked me if I wanted to smoke. I hastened to assure him I didn't.

The restaurant - not the cafe - has in the past been non-smoking. A recent (winter 2000) visitor reports: "...the people next to us lit up cigarettes and we proceeded to demand that they put them out. They did and management moved them to the very end of the restaurant, near the entrance to the kitchen, so they were far away from us. So, I don't know if this means this spot is no longer completely non-smoking, but in the past it has been a reliable and lovely place for lunch or tea in the afternoon." (Can't resist an aside: isn't that a switch? smokers being seated by the kitchen?)

This is a Bouchon Lyonnais in Paris. They have a small but separate non-smoking room. At one time they had a picture of the owner Serge Alzerat with Chirac, you could tell from their expressions who knew he was still going to be in the same place in 5 more years. Serge obviously enjoys his own cooking, as does everyone else. He believes in Beaujolaistherapie. His veal onglet with shallots is in our opinion the best to be found anywhere, he lists his meat supplier by name. Believe it or not they serve the best Irish Coffee in the world. Reservations recommended.

Pizza Milano
2 Place Saint Michel (6eme)     tel 01 44 07 32 27
Nigh impossible to find a smoke-free ANYTHING in Paris, this place was a veritable refuge! The food is good, and the prices moderate. The ambiance is friendly and clean. The restaurant has smoking and non-smoking sections, but unlike other establishments who have the same, the two sections are separated by some distance from each other (you will not be seated at a table right next to smokers). There is a non-smoking section on the upper level as well as on the ground level. The layout of the restaurant is an "L" shape. The smoking section faces the Seine river (nice views) and the non-smoking section faces Blvd. Saint Michel, Notre Dame, and a great fountain in Place Saint Michel.
Thanks J. M. Temple!

Pizza and (heavy) salads and wine and big ice cream concoctions. Has a nonsmoking 'area' in the back. It wasn't bad. Caters to locals rather than tourists. They automatically bring you glasses of some kind of rosé. Dinner came in at around 12 euros per person with wine.

La Table d'Albert
3 rue Pierre Leroux (7ème)     01 43 06 33 09
Label "100% sans tabac". This restaurant is a special one as it is the one of a professional school of cooking. One of the rules for those places is to make pay only for the raw ingredients used in the cooking process, another rule is you have to make reservation to eat there. From the street nothing can help you to guess there is a restaurant at this address.
Thanks Laurent!

August 2005 review:
What a truly wonderful restaurant! Very small, only a few tables. The service is attentive yet unobtrusive and friendly. The food is exceptional. One member of our party has allergies to members of the onion, garlic, chive, etc. family. The chef came out to discuss this with him, to make sure she prepared the food to his needs. Each dish was a delight of well-balanced and interesting flavors and textures. Thanks Randy!

"Sumptuous" "back-in-time" Belle Epoque historic monument, huge room, 30+ foot ceilings. There may be no official no-smoking section, but we asked for nonfumer, and there was nobody smoking within 50 feet of us. The room and setting are breathtaking. Rated "14" in Zagat ("27" for decor.) RATP

The RATP is the authority for the Paris transport system (local and suburban (RER) trains and buses). Paris has a great train system, so logically laid out, and some beautiful stations, a number recently refurbished. Lots of street musicians - generally good (you have to audition). Oh and no smoking.

HOTELS/APARTMENTS/LODGING

Cecil Hotel
47 rue Beaunier, 14th arrondissement
Two stars. Advertises on its door that it is a non-smoking hotel.

Hotel de Chevreuse
3, rue de Chevreuse (6th)     tél 01 43 20 93 16
Caveat: I have not stayed here! I discovered it by walking past and seeing the "non fumeur" sign on its door. It is a one-star hotel on a quiet street in the south end of the 6th. I went in and verified from the nice woman at the desk that the entire hotel is in fact SMOKE FREE. Rates are about $70 euro/night for a room with "salle des bains." Neither their business card nor their tariff sheet listed a website or email. Decor was faded 1960's but seemed pleasant
Thanks Leslie!

A nice hotel in a quiet back street off the rue de Rivoli. I stayed for a week (winter 2004). The unsmokiness of the rooms depends on who your neighbor is - on two nights, the air tasted bitter. On three, it was OK. The staff smoke in their office, so I can't say it's a nonsmoking hotel. But the morning dining area is nonsmoking, and I was comfortable. It's a nice place, midway between Metro St Paul and Bastille, close to the Place des Vosges. Quiet at night. Well maintained.

Hôtel du Lion
1 Av. Gen. Le Clerc (14th)

A floor for nonsmokers; note, the salon is NOT smokefree.

CHAIN RESTAURANTS IN FRANCE

A BIG thank you to a friend for this great write-up on chain restaurants.

Buffalo Grill
French restaurant (steak) chain with no-smoking sections - more branches outside Paris.
L. D. comments:: ... there is a non smoking section, but I never could get a table in it because it was always fully booked, and if you call them in order to book in advance, they say that they don't accept bookings. Otherwise, the food is good and prices are rather low.

Hippopotamus
French steak chain restaurant
Good smoke free sections in any location. The host or hostess will always ask you your seating preference. The food is good but service is uneven. Non stop service from 11am. Some restaurants are even open until 5am!

Chez Clément
French chain restaurant
Excellent dining experiences in wonderful locations. Restaurants are beautifully decorated and each location has its own charm. Restaurants are huge, hence they offer good smoke free sections. Note that during remote hours (ie 2pm to 7pm), there might be only one room opened (usually not smoke free...). Food is excellent and service is top! Open non stop. If making a reservation via their website, enter your non smoking preference in the "comments" field.

McDonald's
Almost every French McDonald's restaurant is smoke-free. Some restaurants among the 800 in France are unique by their themed decoration. Check the ones in Champs Elysees or Disney Village for instance. Independently run McDonald's may have a (small) smoking floor. Very rare though.

Quick
A clone of McDonald's... Most restaurants offer at least two third of the seating capacity to non smokers. Some restaurants are totally smoke-free.

Columbus Café
A clone of Starbucks... French espresso bars chain. Like Starbucks, Columbus Café have in-store locations (you might find Columbus Café in Fnac stores, equivalent of... Barnes and Noble) and street locations. In-store locations are *supposed* to be smoke-free as smoking is never permitted in stores or shops. Note Feb. 2001: At the location on rue Soufflot people were smoking indoors. They have two levels (street level and basement) both of them full of smoke, much worse than any other cafe I saw. No ashtrays are provided, so they were using cup lids. Street locations have various smoking policies. Locations are very small.

Disneyland Paris restaurants
> Table service restaurants
In every table service restaurant, at least half of the seating capacity is non smoking. Wonderful dining experiences available with an extraordinary choice of cuisine. And good smoke free experience.
> Fast food restaurants
If the restaurants are small: always smoke free. If they are huge: at least half of the seating capacity is smoke free (sometimes two third).
> Cafés outside the park (hotels and Disney Village)
Iike any French café, smoking is still the norm. Generally less than one third of >the seating capacity is non smoking, and unfortunately, separation >is often meaningless.
> Hotels
There are 7 hotels (2 more to come) in the resort. Lots of non smoking rooms and/or floors. Lobbies and other public places are generally smoke free, but not always. Anyway, very few people smoke in those areas.

Other information:
Cigarettes are not sold in the theme park. Smoking is not permitted (nor eating or drinking) in attraction lines, attractions, shows, etc. Fun fact: Disneyland Paris is the only Disney park where alcohol (fine wines generally) may be served. Only with a meal at table service restaurants.

Disneyland Paris consists of five main areas: the Magic Kingdom (the park itself), Disney Village (a kind of Pleasure Island), the hotels, the campground, the International Shopping Mall 'Val d'Europe'. A second theme park, Walt Disney Studios, opened on March 16, 2002. It is dedicated to the world of cinema, animation and television. It may be similar to Disney MGM in Florida, however, the French counterpart features one-of-a-kind attractions not found in any other Disney theme park. A great addition to the usual Disneyland Park!

RestoParis
As of January 1, 2008, all restaurants in France are to be smokefree. (!)
Here is a list of restaurants in Paris that are already smoke free.
