NEW JERSEY SMOKEFREE CASINOS
Vincent Rennich, long-time casino table games supervisor, set up this web site after being diagnosed with lung cancer despite never having been a smoker. His goal is to get smoking removed from the casino floor.

June 2006: Ontario casinos are to go smokefree by end of June, including First Nations casinos.

January 2003: Starting July 2003, a number of casinos in Quebec will go smokefree - Casino de Montréal, Casino de Charlevoix, Casino du Lac-Leamy, and Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel. This means all gaming areas, and bars and restaurants. There will be smoking rooms in the gaming areas.

April 2001: Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, banned smoking in restaurants, bars, casinos and other venues. Toronto banned smoking in restaurants and bowling alleys as of June 1. Bars, casinos and pool halls get three years to phase in a smoking ban. We will be glad to hear about any casinos which take the lead.

BRANTFORD, ONTARIO (CANADA)

Casino, restaurant and bar. The casino has 450 slot machines and 60 gaming tables and an off-track sports betting facility. It is all smoke-free as of September 1, 2002. There is a small smoking room for patrons who smoke but there are no machines or gaming tables in that room. All restaurants and bars in Brantford are by law 100% smoke-free.

Our kindly correspondent says the casino "had an entire smoke-free floor!!! The casino is three levels, and the second level is a non-smoking floor. I have visited many other casinos in the US, and while they have smoke-free tables or perhaps areas, I don't know any that have an entire floor as non-smoking. Incidentally, it was just as busy!"

CALIFORNIA (USA)

Indian Casino. Most of the casino is smoke-free, though only one area is completely separate (in the rear). My favorite spot was the VIP lounge which was quiet and not as brightly lit and was extremely pleasant. The best part was that after about 3 hours in that spot, my clothes had absolutely no smell of smoke!!!
It is fabulous. Most of the casino is non-smoking! You can go to their site and see a shaded map showing the smoking and non-smoking areas. Their slot machines are nice too - from 1 to 2 to 3 to 5 cents and more. They have some very new machines in the VIP lounge (a place that is quiet and serene). I'm so proud of them, I am going to write them a letter!
I should only compare it to the other casinos in the area, which may have a non-smoking section, but that section would be small compared to the rest of the casino and not walled off that I can remember.
They are fabulous and are in process of planning additional areas to their casino which could also be smoke-free if they get positive feedback. My husband and I just wrote them raving revue comment cards - mainly because of their extensive non-smoking areas.

Casino San Pablo has been purchased by a California Indian Tribe which has been landless since the 1960's and is trying to negotiate a 'gaming compact' for Vegas-style gaming, which about 60 other tribes in California have already done. It is currently smoke-free and will probably remain so under the tribe. Also, you can only buy 2 packs of cigarettes at a time (no cartons).

The Bellagio
The poker room is a separate room. It is as smoke-free as you can get in a casino. It is also one of "the big boys" when it comes to Poker. You have to go through the smoky casino to get there.

The Mirage
The poker area is in the middle of the smoky casino. It is better than the "No-Smoking" Blackjack tables, but not much. At least not allowing smoking at the table is a step in the right direction.

The Orleans
They allow smoking at the tables on the "graveyard" shift (11pm-7am), but do not at other times. The Poker area is at one end of the casino. It is far from smoke-free, but it is better than most rooms.

Mandalay Bay - (Oct. 2004) The entire Mandalay Bay Group (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, Circus Circus) has gone to non-smoking poker rooms. news from Fred!

LAUGHLIN, NEVADA (USA)

Has two casinos, one non-smoking. Harrah's casinos are classic Las Vegas glitz, flashing lights and noise. I play the quarter slots, while my wife prefers the nickel machines. They have the usual assortment of craps, roulette, poker, blackjack, baccarat, keno, sports book and every other form of legal gambling available in Nevada. The best part is the two large smoke-free casino areas that are accessible without going through the smoky casinos. Harrah's is a cut above most of the other casinos in Laughlin. I'd even recommend it to smokers. As I recall, the eating places have non-smoking sections, where you still may get some odor from the nearby smoking sections.
